Meet Maggie

Nature and vivid colors inspire my work—bold, colorful landscapes and botanical hooked rugs rendered in rich textures of mohair, wool, silk, and other fibers. Living in Colorado gives me lots of inspiration to draw on. Whether it’s the rugged Rockies, grassy meadows, or the high desert along the front range, the scenery and wildlife is extraordinary to see. I began hooking rugs in 2009 and transitioned to designing and creating contemporary rugs in 2022. Since then my practice has focused on translating the energy and palette of the natural world into tactile, layered surfaces that invite a closer look.

I’m an avid learner and continually seek new methods to expand my craft, from fiber blending to advanced hooking and finishing techniques. Teaching is a meaningful part of my practice; I believe sharing knowledge is a gift, and I genuinely enjoy guiding others through processes, troubleshooting, and the small discoveries that accelerate skill development.

My work balances a strong color sensibility with attention to femininity—contrasting plush mohair with lustrous silk, or dense wool with airy threads—to create depth, movement, and a contemporary style. Each piece is both a study in composition and a celebration of texture and combines abstract and impressionism art styles.

Inspiration

Being outside to observe nature and the organic lines of various landscapes is my source of inspiration for my botanical and landscape rugs. I love drawing exaggerated lines and then picking textiles with different textures and bold colors.

I also find that meditating before I begin hooking a rug helps me to find balance and a sense of calm, so I can be open to allow for creative flow experimentation and spatial awareness. For about 10 minutes or so, I focus only on my breathing. This quiets my mind, so that I can be receptive to try new techniques and begin a new project where I sketch a design on the cloth or continue work on a project that I already started.

Creative thinker. Mountain lover. Smitten with red. Collector of swoon-worthy textiles, books, and vintage stationary.

“The course was so well organized and put together with a lot of useful information. Maggie taught me how to use color values and tones to achieve watercolor effects in my rug. Her detailed step-by-step guidebook is perfect for me to refer back to when I hook my rugs. My head was spinning with all the information she provided. I look forward to taking more classes with her.”
